The Kentucky Oaks

The Kentucky Oaks was first run on May 19, 1875 at the Louisville Jockey Club, which would eventually be known as Churchill Downs.

The first Oaks was run at a mile and a 1/2, with Vinaigrette taking her place in history as the winner of Kentucky Oaks 1. While the distance has changed since the races inception, the quality of winners has not. Fillies like Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna and Rachel Alexandra, as well as greats like Monomoy Girl, Shedaresthedevil, Wistful, Lite Light, Rags to Riches and Malathaat. Hall of Fame members to also win the race are Cicada, Dark Mirage, Bold ’n Determined, Princess Doreen, Susan’s Girl, Princess Rooney, Ashado, Silverbulletday, and Davona Dale.

The start of an enduring legend, a spark ignited by destiny itself—a story written in the flames of courage, passion, and relentless hope. It’s the heartfelt genesis of something eternal, where dreams ignite and history is born anew. This is more than just a start; it’s the dawn of greatness waiting to be carved into the very fabric of time.
